From our member organisations
Many of us are not aware of the suffering that countless egg-laying hens go through in their lifetime. They are kept in battery cages which do not allow for any kind of movement. I urge those who consume eggs to become aware of this and call on corporations as well as individual egg producers to transition to cage-free systems.

Crores of egg-laying hens are imprisoned in battery cages for their entire lives across India. These cages confine hens in tiny spaces where they can’t stretch their wings, can’t move or engage in any natural behaviours, which is unethical and extremely detrimental to their welfare.

Battery cages are probably at the very top of the cruelty pyramid. To keep any animal confined to a cage the size of an A4 sheet of paper, with no possibility of exhibiting any natural behaviour only indicates how low a person can stoop in pursuit of money.

Forty crore hens in India live in battery cages where they get less space than an A4 size paper sheet to live their entire lives- they can’t stand up straight, they can never spread their wings. The consumers of India demand humane and ethical practices. Hens deserve a better life.

Hens are imprisoned in battery cages for their entire lifetime. Battery cages are unethical and extremely harmful for the welfare of hens.

Battery cages used in commercial egg production are hell holes for hens. To put an end to this unethical practice, the Bharat Initiative for Accountability was formed. We hope corporations move from the cruel battery cage format to cage-free options.

“Battery cages put hens in extremely vulnerable positions, and cause immense psychological harm. So many hens are stuffed into tiny spaces where they can barely open up their wings, which makes them extremely frustrated and stressed. We urge organisations to go cage-free. We believe all animals deserve the same basic rights.”

“ We need to keep our animals free from pain and torture. These poor animals can barely spread their feathers or bathe or sit or turn around. It’s the most cruel thing. We have to put an end to these battery cages.”

"As more and more hens are subjected to intolerable cruelty and abuse, with every passing day. It is high time that we strive hard to make corporates accountable for this abuse and shift to cage-free eggs.”

"Across India, crores of hens are trapped in battery cages for their entire lives. Hens are birds and they need to move, spread their wings, perch, and engage in other natural instincts. But the egg industry denies them these basic freedoms for the sake of profit.”

“No bird deserves to live trapped in a wire cage, unable to even spread her wings. Battery cages are one of the most cruel forms of confinement, stripping hens of their most basic freedoms. It is our moral responsibility to ensure animals do not suffer because of our choices—or our ignorance. Animal welfare is not optional; it is a reflection of who we are as a society. A truly just and humane food system begins with compassion.”
